E-rate News for the Week
June 11, 2001
The following is a summary of the E-rate News for the Week of June 11, 2001, prepared by E-Rate Central. Official SLD news appears in the "What's New!" section of the SLD's Web site . Additional and archived information appears elsewhere on this Web site.

New SLD Web Site Search Mechanism for Previous Funding

The SLD has established a new search mechanism on its Web site to allow users to find applicant funding awards for the past three funding year (including out-of-the-window awards for PY2). In the past, the only way to search the SLD site for applicant awards was to download funding wave data on a year-by-year, state-by-state, wave-by-wave basis – a particularly time-consuming process unless the searcher knew the applicant's exact funding wave.

The new mechanism allows individual funding year searches by applicant name, state or Zip Code. To search by applicant name, a user must know at least the start of the actual name used on the initial application. Many users may find it easier to search by Zip Code.

The award search window, and associated instructions, can be found on the SLD's Web site

Special SLD Notice to PY4 Applicants

On June 15, the SLD began sending notices (actually dated June 16) to all PY4 applicants discussing the need to be in compliance, or at least to be undertaking actions to comply, with the Internet filtering and policy requirements of the Children's Internet Protection Act ("CIPA"). The notice is being faxed or e-mailed to applicants who listed either as the preferred mode of contact on their Form 471 applications, and is being mailed to all others.

The three-page notice twice highlights the following point:

In order to receive E-rate discounts for Funding Year 4, the administrative authorities for recipients of Internet Access or Internal Connections services must, at a minimum, be able to certify that, as of the date of the start of discounted services in that year, they are undertaking actions toward full compliance with the requirements of CIPA for Funding Year 5.

A copy of the SLD's CIPA notice is available on the E-Rate Central Web site by clicking here.
